Lighting Design of Sports Venues

For modern people, the increasingly tense economy and pace of life force them to release their stress through various sports (or participation, or appreciation). Whether from the perspective of sports itself or audience appreciation, sports venues need a scientific and reasonable design plan. Why is that so?

For modern sports venues, we not only hope that it has a beautiful appearance and complete internal facilities, but also hope that they have a good lighting environment. For example, reasonable and uniform illumination, scientific color temperature of lamps and lanterns, eliminating glare, etc. In addition to ensuring that sports participants (including athletes and referees) can perform at their true level and avoid unnecessary safety accidents, it is also necessary to ensure a good viewing effect for the audience. More importantly, a qualified lighting design for sports venues must meet the lighting effects required for various television broadcasts and live broadcasts.

In general, for a modern sports venue, we require the following three key points to be considered in its lighting design:

Firstly, whether the lighting system can fully meet the visual requirements of sports participants, such as athletes and referees. At the same time, the negative effects of lighting on sports participants, such as excess illumination and glare.

Secondly, whether the lighting system can meet the visual requirements of audience appreciation and make the competition process fully presented, including the expression of athletes, clothing, props, etc. In addition, we also asked to minimize the negative impact of the lighting on the audience.

Thirdly, in addition, for some events, there may be only a very small number of people watching the competition. Therefore, the lighting system also needs to meet the lighting requirements of TV broadcasts and live broadcasts to improve the video quality.

Therefore, lighting design is closely related to sports events. A modern sports stadium cannot do without an efficient and high-quality lighting system.

Previously, we discussed the importance and role of lighting design in sports venues. So, to fully utilize the role of sports venue lighting design, we need to understand specific reference standards and requirements for sports venue lighting design. Including illumination, color temperature, color rendering, glare control, etc., all need to be carefully considered and implemented in place.

Illumination requirements

Taking football stadiums as an example, according to the recommended illuminance for sports venues in the International Sports Federation Document No. 83 and the provisions of the "Lighting Design Standards for Civil Buildings" GBJ133-90, we need to meet the following requirements for the illuminance level of football stadiums:

1. Taking the lighting design of football fields as an example, according to Article 2.2.9-1 of the "Lighting Design Standard for Civil Buildings" GBJ133-90, the standard value of lighting for football field matches is:

When the viewing distance is 120m, the lighting should reach 150-200-300lx;

When the viewing distance is 160m, the illumination should reach 200-300-500lx; When the viewing distance is 200m, the illumination value is required to be 300-500-750lx.

Viewing distance refers to the distance from the last row of the audience to the sideline of the venue.

2. The live broadcast of sports programs also needs to consider the vertical illumination of television broadcasting. According to Article 2.2.9-2 of the "Lighting Design Standard for Civil Buildings" GBJ133-90, the vertical illumination required for television broadcasting is divided into three groups: the maximum shooting distance:

a. For football projects, when the maximum shooting distance is 25m, the average vertical illumination should reach 750lx;

b. When the maximum shooting distance is 75m, the average vertical illumination is required to reach 1000lx;

c. When the maximum shooting distance is 150m, the average vertical illumination is required to reach a level of 1500.

3. The above illuminance refers to the final average illuminance of the sports stadium. When designing lighting, we need to add an additional maintenance coefficient, usually using a coefficient value between 0.7 and 0.8.

4. Uniformity of horizontal illumination: The uniformity of illumination is generally expressed as the ratio of minimum to maximum illumination, or as the ratio of minimum to average illumination. The ratio of minimum to maximum illumination should be greater than 0.5. In addition, we also need to pay attention to the vertical illumination uniformity of the venue: the ratio of minimum illumination to maximum illumination should be greater than 0.4 to meet the requirements of the main television camera.

Lighting quality

1. Glare control

Since the space of sports venues is relatively large, there are many participating groups, including athletes and referees, spectators and field affairs, etc. Therefore, when doing the lighting design of sports venues, we must pay attention to the control of glare in each space. In this way, it can not only achieve good lighting effects, but also make athletes play at a competitive level, at the same time, but also let the audience fully see the details of the game.

Glare restrictions, of course, there are a lot of ways, such as the choice of a reasonable type of lamps and lanterns, adjusting the installation height, angle, and the arrangement of lamps and lanterns, can also carry bright background field method used to "weakening" dazzle light.

2. Light source color temperature and color rendering standards

To achieve a better effect on television to watch, stadium lighting quality is not just about the intensity of illumination, color temperature, and color rendering are equally important. Illuminance standards only can let us "see clearly", and color temperature and color rendering standards can let us "see well".
